Your certification levels
What each French (FFESSM) level allows:
- Bronze and silver young divers dive to 6 m with an instructor.
- Gold young divers dive to 12 m with an instructor from age 10, and to 20 m from age 12.
- PE12 is the simple entry (no medical certificate, no licence): up to 12 m with an instructor.
- PE20/N1 allows guided exploration dives to 20 m. From 12 years old.
- PA20 is open to PE20/N1 divers aged 16 and over: dive without an instructor, with 1 or 2 other divers, down to 20 m.
- PE40 allows guided exploration dives to 40 m. From 16, PE20/N1 certified.
- An N2 diver holds both the PE40 and PA20 qualifications. From 16, PE20/N1 certified.
- PA40 is open to N2 divers aged 17 and over: dive without an instructor, with 1 or 2 other divers, down to 40 m.
- PE60 allows guided exploration dives to 60 m. From 18, PE40 certified.
- An N3 diver dives autonomously in a buddy team, down to 60 m when diving with a dive centre and to 40 m when diving independently. From 17, N2 certified, RIFAP rescue course required.
